Archdeacons in Wakefield Diocese. There are two Archdeacons serving Wakefield Diocese. The Archdeacon of Halifax looks after the west of the diocese (the deaneries of Calder Valley, Halifax, Brighouse and Elland, Huddersfield, Almondbury and Kirkheaton). The Archdeacon of Pontefract looks after the east (the deaneries of Dewsbury, Wakefield, Chevet, Pontefract, Barnsley and Birstall). What is a Archdeacon? An Archdeacon is a source of advice, guidance and support to the Bishop, clergy, churchwardens and the people of the parishes he or she serves. S/he admits churchwardens into office each year at the annual Visitation and ensures that parishes look after their church buildings. S/he is also involved with the appointment of parish clergy and in their ministry review, and sits on many of the key committees of the diocese. |
